Job Summary & Scope:

The CSSD manager is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective management of the CSSD services. Ensures that the department operates efficiently providing sterile supplies to all areas and units within the hospital. This responsibility requires direct coordination and supervision of CSSD staff to ensure an efficient and effective preparation and sterilization service is provided by utilizing a high standard of skills and procedures in accordance with industry and hospital guidelines.

Essential Job Functions & Key responsibilities:

  1. Ensures safe and efficient decontamination and sterilization of reusable surgical instruments.
  2. Develops, oversees and supervises departmental infection control, quality control and quality improvement programs and staff; ensures their compliance with Ministry and other regulations; monitors work in progress as well as completed work to ensure process and service quality; develops and authorizes action plans when needed for improvement; responds to complaints and seeks appropriate remedies.
  3. Manages processing and reassembly of medical supplies, equipment, and instrumentation.
  4. Develops, interprets, and implements departmental goals, policies and procedures to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of departmental facilities, services and personnel which directly support the strategic plan and vision of the organization; oversees the preparation and maintenance of department policy and standard operating procedure manuals.
  5. Plans, organizes, coordinates, CSSD Staff and directs the administrative and technical work of CSSD; develops workload and productivity standards; ensures that departmental work is performed in a manner that appropriately serves clients and maintains positive relationship among departments.
  6. Assists physicians, OT manager and others with meeting equipment/supply needs; researches and locates special products needed for unusual situations; helps surgical and other staff evaluate new procedures.
  7. Ensures appropriate departmental staffing; selects, assigns, trains, directs and evaluates subordinate staff; takes appropriate action on disciplinary matters; verifies and monitors staff proficiency; identifies staff development needs and oversees training and education activities as required. Manages staff relations including scheduling, recruitment, performance management, staff satisfaction, and conflict management.
  8. Ensures that CSSD Staff are up to date with departmental policies and standard operating procedures.
  9. Reviewing sterilization records for accuracy and completeness and making any necessary corrections.
  10. Manages, and is accountable for, the replenishment, distribution and maintenance of sterile processing equipment and supplies; ensures proper equipment function as well as timely and preventative maintenance of equipment; establishes maintenance and replacement schedules; monitors and assures the proper use of chemicals and personal safety equipment; develops accident prevention, emergency and disaster plans; may recommend facility improvements or assist with planning new facility construction.
  11. Monitors departmental budgets, regulatory compliance, departmental contracts, and vendor relations. Determines and justifies needs for systems/equipment/supplies purchases, monitors usage, and oversees proper working order and/or stock supplies.
  12. Ensures effective and appropriate utilization of materiel management/surgical management information systems as well as related administrative tools to support department operations; collects and maintains accurate data; oversees the preparation and maintenance of records and reports; ensures that the communication of confidential patient information is done appropriately.
  13. Provide all of the employment history, education, and licenses/certifications of each CSSD Staff.
  14. Confers with Hospital managers, directors, and others regarding departmental activities; responds to and resolves service issues; Ensuring that all sterilization equipment is functioning properly and ordering repairs when necessary. Represent CSSD to individuals and groups; attends meetings and conferences; participates on committees as assigned.

Knowledge & Qualifications:

Licensure:

QCHP licensing requirement – meets QCHP requirements – licensed as CSSD Technician

Education:

A bachelor’s degree is required.

Experience:

At least three to five years of supervisory experience working in a hospital’s CSSD

Languages:

Fluent in English. Ability to speak in Arabic.

Ms. Wazne received her Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the Lebanese American University in 2011 . She completed her Masters degree in Clinical Pharmacy from the Lebanese University. Ms. Wazne has worked at the American University of Beirut Medical Center for more than ten years. Ms. Wazne has given a variety of oral presentations to nurses, and pharmacists on local and national level . She has been certified from Harvard Medical School in Immuno-oncology and Cancer Genomics. She is an active member in the Order of Pharmacists of Lebanon. Her professional interests include medication safety and research.

Scope of practice

Sirine Abou Al Hassan is a US. registered clinical dietitian with extensive experience in nutritional management of chronic and diet-related diseases. Previously, Sirine worked as clinical dietitian specialized in obesity weight management, Child and Maternal Health and Eating Disorders. She graduated from University College London with a masters of science in Clinical Nutrition and Eating Disorders; Following on from a Bachelors of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics-Coordinated Program from the American University of Beirut, both with distinction
